Fake Rent Control Alert
Santa Cruz City Council to Introduce Weak Renter Protections Ahead of Vote on Measure M
The Santa Cruz City Council's "Non-Protections for Renters" proposal, as rent control advocates have described it, is scheduled for a first reading during the 2:00 p.m. session on Tuesday, September 11. The ordinance would require relocation fees for tenants who experience rent increases of 10% in one year or 15% over two years, which would still allow a 42% rent increase every five years. Yes on M: Santa Cruz for Rent Control writes: "We need REAL rent control: No Rent Raises over 3% once a year, Just Cause for Eviction for all renters - and heck, the city didn't even enforce its own rent freeze so of COURSE we need a Rent Board. We need your butts-in-line to tell the council we're not buying this proposal to throw tenants under the bus."
Measure M qualified by a landslide to be placed on the November 2018 ballot. The measure calls for rent stabilization, eviction protections, and the formation of an elected “Rent Board” which will handle the regulation of rent prices and evictions within the City of Santa Cruz.
Yes on Measure M signs are now available from Santa Cruz for Rent Control. It is illegal for a landlord to prohibit political yard signs of any size. The signs have that info on them in fine print. If you are a renter living in the city, you are covered by Just Cause for Eviction laws. Santa Cruz for Rent Control is calling for as many renters on a block as possible to put a sign or window sign up. "We are being inundated by a million bucks worth of signs but don't worry - most of us want rent control! And we vote! Everyone - including renters - needs to see that we are not going to sit this one out," the group writes.
