Science Supporters Gather in Oakland
March for Science Rally and Street Fair
On April 14, the second annual March for Science Bay Area included a walk around the Lake Merritt path, speakers, and live music. The sunny day event also featured information booths and hands-on demonstrations, speakers, live music and activities for children.
Activists appealed for environmental causes and politically inclined participants carried posters including one reading "Fund methods of math instruction, not weapons of mass destruction." Organizers explained they want robustly funded and publicly communicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity, adding "We unite as a diverse, non-partisan group to call for science that upholds the common good, and for political leaders and policy makers to enact evidence-based policies in the public interest".
Among groups raising banners at the rally was UAW Local 5810, a union of more than 6,500 postdoctoral scholars at all 10 campuses of the University of California and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. The Union negotiates a collective bargaining agreement that sets minimum standards for pay, benefits, rights, and protections for all UC postdocs.
