June 21st Hearing at SF Board of Supervisors Land Use Commitee
Low-Income Housing Advocates to Demand Earthquake Safety for Civic Center Hotel
SF Supervisor Chris Daly has introduced a resolution before the Board's Land Use Committee to ask the UA Plumbers Local 38 Pension Trust Fund, which owns the Civic Center Hotel, to promptly proceed with a seismic retrofit. The building does not have the City-mandated seismic retrofit for Unreinforced Masonry Buildings. The Land Use Committee will be meeting in San Francisco City Hall on Wednesday, June 21st at 1:00pm.

The building's owner refuses to comply with the UMB (Unreinforced Masonry Building) Seismic Retrofit Ordinance and make the building safer in an earthquake. Instead, they seem to want to demolish the building entirely. Tenants and supporters are being asked to add their testimony to the public comment section of the hearing on the resolution. They will explain why low-income housing is important to maintaining San Francisco's healthy diversity and show why the loss of 150 affordable housing units would be harmful to the City. They will point out that putting up to 150 families, disabled persons, and members of the working poor out on the street does not serve the public interest. Read more
