In 2001, anarchists stormed the stage at the Webbies and stole the "News" award from corporate nominees CNN and ABC News, stating, "The Webby Awards are a celebration of corporate domination over the internet. The whole purpose is to take a popularly created participatory and democratic medium and laud the work of people who are squeezing profit out of it... If Indymedia is an activist site, mainstream media like CNN or ABC are activists for corporations and rich elites." Indymedia, which had been nominated in the "Activism" category, documented the heist (video) and an interview with then-WorldCom CEO and arch-crook Bernie Ebbers (video).
