Anti-Fracking Activists Call for Real Climate Leadership
California State Office Building Blockaded in SF Day Before Huge Oakland Climate March
On February 7, thousands of people from across the state took to the streets of Oakland to call on Governor Jerry Brown to protect Californians from dangerous oil activities that harm the state's water, health and communities. People from all walks of life called on Governor Jerry Brown to stop fracking and other extreme energy extraction in the state, stand up to big oil and move California beyond fossil fuels to 100% renewable energy.
The day before, on February 6, about seventy activists blockaded the entrances to the California State office building in San Francisco in support of a state-wide ban on fracking. Early morning commuters found an oil derrick blocking traffic in front of the California state office complex, along with protesters chanting in the streets, meditating on the front steps, and blocking all three entrances on McAllister Street. The protesters were there to petition governor Jerry Brown to support a statewide ban on fracking, the controversial oil drilling method that has exacerbated California's drought and caused drinking water contamination in the Central Valley, along with other health consequences in the already-impacted region.
