Bay Area Rallies and Marches in Solidarity with Anaheim
Solidarity Actions Nationwide After Anaheim Police Kill Two and Attack Protesters
On Saturday, July 21st, Anaheim police shot and killed 25-year-old Manuel Diaz, who was reportedly unarmed, by shooting him in the back and head. Hours after the shooting, women and children gathered to protest, and police opened fire on protestors with beanbags and pepper spray, and also released a dog which attacked demonstrators. On Sunday, July 22nd, Anaheim police shot and killed Joel Acevedo. Protests in Anaheim escalated until Tuesday night, when crowds of over 600 demonstrators marched through the city, breaking windows and lobbing rocks at cops. Police arrested 24 people in Anaheim that evening.
On July 26th, a solidary march was held in San Francisco. On July 27th, over two hundred people marched in Oakland in solidarity with the people of Anaheim. Protestors rallied at Oscar Grant Plaza downtown, then marched to OPD headquarters chanting "From Oakland to Anaheim, fuck the police!" Windows were smashed at the Warehouse Bar & Grill, a local bar frequented by Oakland police.
