Nurses Strike at 15 Northern California Hospitals
5000 Walk Off the Job, Demanding Improvements in Patient Care
Nurses represented by the California Nurses Association went on strike
Wednesday, October 10 at 15 Northern California hospitals, 13 of which are
in the Bay Area. With 5000 nurses expected to participate, the 2-day strike
is being called the largest in a decade. Nurses say they are striking to
improve patient care and to protect their healthcare and retirement
benefits. Strikers are especially committed to addressing staffing issues
and planned service cuts that threaten to undermine patient care.
The nurses are targeting hospital operator Sutter Health, with whom their negotiations for a new contract have stalled. Affected facilities include Alta Bates Summit Medical Center hospitals in Oakland and Berkeley, the Mills-Peninsula Health Services in Burlingame and San Mateo, and California Pacific Medical Center and St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco.
