Filipino Nurses in San Francisco Join Strike
Originally From New America Media
Friday, October 12, 2007 : SAN FRANCISCO -- Filipino nurses were part of the biggest nurses' strike in California in nearly a decade, reports Philippine News. More than 5,000 registered nurses went on strike on Oct. 10 and 11 in fifteen mostly San Francisco Bay Area hospitals operated by the Sutter Health Corporation.
The nurses belong to the California Nurses Association (CAN) and are protesting the plan of Sutter Health to slash patient care services in hospitals in economically disadvantaged communities, even closing a few. At the same time, CNA is also calling for action against Sutter Health’s moves to cut nurses’ benefits including retirement and healthcare insurance. It’s been reported that the strike follows the collapse of negotiations between Sutter Health and CNA. But Sutter Health Communications Director Karen Garner clarified with Philippine News that there is actually no negotiating table between CNA and Sutter Health. Garner says CNA is only talking to individual hospitals, not bargaining with the entire corporation, with the hope of forging a single, master contract between CNA and Sutter Health.
