July 1st Night of Solidarity with the San Francisco 8
Bail Hearings for SF 8 Delayed Until August Due to Judge's Vacation
A night of solidarity with the San Francisco 8 was held on Sunday, July 1st at the Women's Building in San Francisco. The event began at 6:30pm, and included a talk and Q&A session by activist and writer Derrick Jensen, and a case update from SF8 committee member and longtime activist Penny Schoner.
The next court date for the San Francisco 8 will be on Monday, August 6th at 9am in the San Francisco Courthouse (850 Bryant St.). Judge Moscone's vacation is seen as a major delay in attempting to set an attainable bail for some of these brothers. A very brief hearing was held Thursday morning, June 21st, but as the Judge was planning a vacation, he did not make decisions on any issues of substance.
The first matters to be taken up in August are the continued bail reduction testimony and motions for Ray Boudreaux and Richard O'Neal. Issues related to the defendants being shackled in court will be scheduled in August-- they currently wear waist chains, hands cuffed to waist chains and legs cuffed to leg chains when they are before the judge. In a recent hearing, the judge did allow the men to be partially unshackled so they could take notes during the proceedings. Some of Judge Moscone's comments indicate that the case may be heard in Department 23, the judge's normal courtroom, rather than Department 21 - the high security courtroom where all of last week's proceedings were held.
Consciousness-raising events in solidarity with the SF 8 are being held around the country, from "Legacy of Torture" screenings in Los Angeles to a workshop at the United States Social Forum.
