Human Battery Cage at Lunardi's in Belmont
Activists Protest Sale of Battery Cage Eggs at Regional Grocery Chain
Members of East Bay Animal Advocates (EBAA) staged a protest on Sunday, June 10, in front of the Lunardi's Market in Belmont to draw attention to what they say is animal cruelty behind the production of eggs sold by Lunardi's. East Bay Animal Advocates allege in their pamphlet that the chickens used to produce eggs sold by Lunardi's food chain are kept in small battery cages which allow the birds virtually no mobility. Several brands of eggs are sold at Lunardi's, at least two are certified organic and cage free. The brands in question are the ones bearing the United Egg Producers (UEP) label — such as, Lunardi's own house label. The trade organization UEP claims that their egg farmers use humane production methods. However, on the website of Compassion Over Killing (COK) is an article stating that the Federal Trade Commission forced UEP to change it's previous logo — "Animal Care Certified." The new logo states,"United Egg Producers Certified, Produced in compliance with the United Egg Producers' animal husbandry guidlines."
