"Lunardi’s Abuse" Campaign Kicks Off en Force
New Campaign Seeks to End Sales of Battery Cage Eggs at Lunardi’s Supermarkets
After their successful effort to stop Andronico's Market from selling battery-caged eggs in 2006, East Bay Animal Advocates (EBAA) is now campaigning to stop Andronico's lead competitor Lunardi's Supermarket from doing the same. Lunardi's relies on the egg supplier Ranch Pak, which utilizes intensive battery cages in massive warehouses. While Andronico's Market no longer uses such eggs, and Lunardi's does already offer a small array of free-range and cage-free egg products, Lunardi's continues to sell most of their eggs from chickens confined to battery cages. After personally contacting Lunardi's corporate office five times throughout the Fall to no avail — and preparing a website, printing informative pamplets to distribute, and placing online advertisements to raise awareness of the issue — EBAA launched its weekly outreach campaign against Lunardi's Supermarket on Saturday, December 23 with a demo in Danville. EBAA is asking the public to join the campaign to urge Lunardi's Supermarket to drop battery cage eggs by contacting company officials directly and by demonstrating at store locations.
