Code Pink Confronts Pelosi About Iraqi Oil Law
Code Pink Confronts Nancy Pelosi
Four Bay Area Code Pink members -- Cynthia Papermaster, Nancy Mancias, Kathy Greene and Janet Weil -- crashed Congressman George Miller's birthday party/fundraiser at the Pleasant Hill Community Center. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was the guest of honor and spoke at length about Miller's career accomplishments in Congress and flourished a whip he gave her as House Democratic "Whip". Her biggest applause line from the 200+ suburbanites, however, came when Pelosi said that Bush and Co. "can't offer any more excuses" about Iraq and presented the Congressional Dems' recent capitulations to Bush on the war supplemental bill as some kind of canny negotiations.
Code Pink members started calling out, "End the war in Iraq! You better do it soon!" and similar remarks in challenging tones. Pelosi ended her remarks by saying being Speaker felt "Absolutely fabulous!"
Later Kathy had a photo op with Congressman Miller and Speaker Pelosi; Kathy, arm around Pelosi's waist, asked her: "Why are you pushing for the Iraqi Oil Law? Isn't that what Bush has wanted from the first?" Madame Speaker replied, "Oh, we're just for equal distribution!" Kathy replied: "But it's one and the same law!" to which Miller chimed in, "We'd never have something like that in OUR law," giving a brush-off sign to Kathy, who gave it right back.
