Feb. 28th: Protest to Save East Oakland Community High School
State Decides to Close East Oakland Community High School
March 1st update: The School Administrator voted to close East Oakland Community High School and several other schools.
East Oakland Community High School (EOC) is under threat of closure by an un-elected State Administrator. EOC is an innovative community school that is "about teaching students to be positive, caring, successful members of our community." Education Not Incarceration (ENI) is building a partnership with the National Education Association's 3.2 million members to stop students from being pushed out of school and into prisons. EOC represents ENI's program to stop "pushouts" in real world terms: support of positive behavior, rather than punative actions such as expulsion and suspension; a strong, culturally aware staff, and curriculum that empowers youth by relating learning to their lives; supporting the growth of the whole child by involving the entire community in the education of each student; and preparing students for higher education or living wage jobs by carefully connecting students to opportunities based on their individual passions.
ENI and other EOC supporters will march to the School Board meeting on Wednesday, February 28th, where State Administrators will present their recommendations to School Board members. Community members will have a chance to speak out and urge State Administrator Kimberly Statham "to give us the time and support to become a great school." Protesters will gather at 2pm at EOC for a press conference (8251 Fontaine Street), or at the School Board meeting from 5-8pm (1025 2nd Avenue). As they march together, they will demand quality education for ALL students through the city of Oakland. Read more
