On August 31st, Independent journalist Josh Wolf was granted bail by a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. He was released the next day. Wolf, 24, had been in federal prison since August 1 for refusing to provide raw video footage to a federal Grand Jury of a 2005 San Francisco protest against the G8 that resulted in an injured police officer.
In the August 31st ruling, two judges for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals granted bail, citing the argument that Wolf's appeal of the contempt-of-court charges wasn't frivolous and did not constitute an effort to delay proceedings. Wolf will still face contempt-of-court charges while free on bail. If he is convicted, he could be sent back to prison until the Grand Jury expires in July 2007.
Wolf has received support from journalists, free media advocates and civil rights supporters worldwide. Prior to today's ruling, Reporters Without Borders, an international media rights group, issued a statement urging the release of Wolf. The same group also wrote in support of Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada, San Francisco Chronicle reporters who also face possible imprisonment for contempt-of-court charges for not revealing sources to another federal Grand Jury investigating illegal steroid use among professional athletes.
