One-Year Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina
Great Flood Commemoration Events
In the Bay Area, several events were held to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans. People planned to honor those who have died, fight for the right to return for all those who are still displaced, and demand an end to blatant racial discrimination in post-Katrina New Orleans A Katrina Community Commemoration was held on Tuesday, August 29th at the First Unitarian Church in Oakland. SF Critical Mass commemorated Katrina on August 25th by remembering the great earthquakes that have rocked the city, and acknowledging the fact that climate change will bring additional disasters to San Francisco.

New Orleans Network lists over 50 commemorative events that will be held in the New Orleans area. New Orleans Indymedia reports that the People's Hurricane Relief Fund is helping to organize an August 29th memorial march.

Spike Lee has produced a cable-TV documentary about the devastation of New Orleans, and the film has been described by one network executive as "one of the most important films HBO has ever made." It was screened at the New Orleans Arena on August 16th, days before it aired on the cable network. The four-hour film is entitled "When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts." It will be shown again on August 29th, the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina's landfall.
