Demolition of Trinity Plaza Apartments Could Make Many Homeless
Trinity Plaza
A year ago in April, 400 residents of the Trinity Plaza received a letter from infamous landlord Angelo Sangiacomo stating that he was seeking a demolition permit, and that he would be evicting all of the tenants in order to tear down their units and build five new condo towers in their place. This community, which is made up of mostly elderly, working-class people of color, has been given a vague deal, where the residents can live in the building during construction, but must move to another undefined location afterwards. Tenants and activists have mobilized to fight the evictions, pressuring the SF Board of Supervisors to issue an anti-demolition bill. Chris Daly has responded with an ordinance that is currently being blocked by Supervisors Dufty, Ma, Hall and Alioto-Pier. Even if Daly is able to get the eight signatures he needs, he will still have to face off against landlord-devotee and anti-homeless icon Gavin Newsom, who is expected to veto the ordinance. If that happens, Chris Daly could ask for an override. Tenants' rights activists are urging people to take action by calling City Hall, especially Sup. Bevan Dufty, who intially voted for the ordinance, and signing onto the anti-eviction petition. Calls and letters must be in Tuesday! Monday 3/29: A vigil was held for Trinity Plaza, at Civic Center.
