3/16: Oakland's City Hall was packed tonight, with scores of residents and organizations, including Critical Resistance and the ACLU, given 1 minute each to speak their piece about the city locking people out of homes and schools. The City Council moved the "Nuisance Eviction Ordinance" forward 6-0 with 1 abstention. The broad and vaguely-worded ordinance provides for the city to designate and evict "nuisance" tenants – without due process; the final draft "Z" of the ordinance does at least allow for tenants to receive written notice of their impending eviction and a summary of the evidence used against them, as well as allowing evictees to send a letter to the city requesting "reconsideration." Oakland City Council will have to vote one more time on the "Nuisance Eviction Ordinance" at the next city council meeting of April 6 in order for it to become law because of the revisions made at this meeting.
