New Draft of "Nuisance Eviction Ordinance" Sails through Oakland City Council
Oakland Passes Nuisance Eviction Ordinance
3/16: In a packed city hall, with scores of residents and organizations from Critical Resistance to the ACLU given 1 minute to speak their piece about the city locking people out of homes and schools, the Oakland City Council approved a new draft of the "Nuisance Eviction Ordinance" 6-0 with 1 abstention; a final vote will take place at the next meeting on April 6. The broadly and vaguely worded ordinance provides for the city to designate and evict "nuisance" tenants without due process; the final draft "Z" of the ordinance does at least allow for tenants to receive written notice of their impending eviction and a summary of the evidence used against them, as well as allowing evictees to send a letter to the city requesting "reconsideration."
3/8: In a bid to reclaim Oakland as a "landlord town" and refashion OPD as the entire city's landlord the Oakland City Council will vote on a frightening ordinance on March 16th called the "Nuisance Eviction Ordinance." This ordinance would give landlords, neighbors and the police the ability to evict tenants for actions considered "nuisances" without: a) charging tenants with a crime or b) having any real evidence, threatening the rights of everyone who lives in the city. Councilmember Larry Reid introduced the measure supposedly to "increase safety" in Oakland. .Photos: 1 2 | Read More... | More info
