Gonzalez in the Lead for Mayor: CBS 5 Poll
Elections Update
11/14: A poll released by channel 5 shows Supervior Matt Gonzalez leading the race for the Mayor's office, 49% to 47% over Supervisor Gavin Newsom.
Prior to today, Newsom, Mayor Brown's hand-picked successor, had been seen as the front-runner in the race since he finished first in the 11/6 elections. With the advent of today's poll however, it's evident that progressive voters who supported Ammiano and Alioto are now overwhelmingly supporting Matt Gonzalez.
The surprising change in favor of Gonzalez is thought be partially a result of the recent debates between the two candidates. Newsom attacked Gonzalez as an extremist because of his Green Party affiliation. Gonzalez responded by calling into question Newsom's prior support and implication in the system of "political patronage" at City Hall.
The poll, carried out by the Survey USA group, surveyed 524 registered voters.
