3/22 - Thousands of People Out on the Streets
Emergency Protests Continue in San Francisco
Breaking News - Live Web Cam:
10:55PM: San Francisco Detention Center Releases 19 by-standers and demonstrators (14 women and 5 men).
9:00PM: United States soldier grenades American officers at 101st Airborne Division's 1st Brigade camp in northern Kuwait - 13 wounded.
7:56PM: 150 people being arrested at Taylor and Ellis. People are also marching on Market towards the Mission.
7:40PM: Reports of police violently pulling cyclists from their bikes on Market. Even shoppers and onlookers are appalled and yelling at police to stop the brutality."
7:15PM: Market St. closed by police between 4th and 8th. Protest group gathered at corners around Powell and Market."
6:57PM: Police are beating people with batons at 5th & Market. Mass arrests reported."
6:55PM: Police: "Anyone riding a bicycle on Market St. will be arrested."
6:43PM: People are marching on Market towards Powell, 31 arrested.
6:30PM: 16 women and 7 men have been doing jail solidarity at 850 Bryant since yesterday.
6:25PM: 2 people reported to be throwing rocks at police at 6th & Market from the top of a building.
6:20PM: Female bicycle activist dragged by the hair by police.
6:12PM: About 30 bicyclists are under assault by police around 6th & Market in front of the Warfield. People are being violently thrown off their bikes and arrested.
6:08PM: Fires in garbage cans all the way down market from 8th to 9th.
5:56PM: There are unconfirmed reports of a vehicle torched near 25th.
5:55PM: Market between 6th & 7th still crazy - possible mass arrest about to happen.
5:46PM: 2 orders to disperse have been given at Jones & Market near 7th. Platoons heading down Jones to take over the dance party in the street. Hundreds of people in the streets.
5:40PM: Sound system has been arrested. Free the sound system! Bring radios out if you have them.
5:30PM: Sounds system at 6th & Market about to be confiscated.
5:28PM: Massive arrest about to happen at Jones & Market. Police just roped off entire street - may possibly sweep up unknowing people.
5:24PM: Black Bloc heading north on Taylor
5:23PM: Order to disperse at Jones/Market - between 6th & 7th.
5:18PM: Police attempting to clear the street Jones/Market, arrests about to occur.
5:13PM: 2 arrests at 6th & Market. Mass of people at 7th & Market -16 police vehicles on the scene.
5:06PM: NBC van surrounded by people yelling "Tell the Truth!"
5:00PM: 7th & Market crowd headed east.March at 10th & Harrison still moving towards Rainbow.
4:56PM: 7th Street between Mission and Market is completely blocked. Seems that crowd moving on 10th is headed toward Rainbow Grocery.
4:50PM: Massive amounts of people at 7th & Mission AND 7th & Market. A ton of people streamed into 7th & Market and are holding intersection. Another 300 are at 10th & Mission. There are reports that police are briinging in emergency vehicles to break up crowds - using firetrucks - BUT INSIDE the trucks there exists a military headquarters - which is violation of geneva convention!
4:45PM: Large group of Black bloc headed south on 7th near Mission. Also 3-400 hundred at Larkin (South bound on polk) have taken the street. Reconvergences announced at Rainbow grocery & Powell and Market.
4:37PM: Parts of Market St. are being shut down. March 600 strong has taken 7th street heading south.
4:29PM: Large group of people headed towards 8th & Market - heavy police presence following them and pushing them onto the sidewalk. ANSWER is announcing for people to reconverge at Rainbow Grocery - which is very near the Bay Bridge. There is solidarity with Rainbow grocery because of their boycott on Israeli products.
4:26PM: Breakaway march leaving grove & larkin with marching band and cheerleaders being led by 2 black flags. There may be multiple breakaways at this point.
4:06PM: Police are stationing troops at grove & hyde. Black Bloc troops still marching through city.
4:02PM: Speeches are being made at Civic Center. Breakaway march still on the move.
3:49PM: Situation at 8th & Mission is dissipating. Reports are if you are on 8th street you may be arrested, lots of cops there. Mounted police at Union Square.
3:30PM: 3 pre-emptive arrests being made at 8th & Mission, arrestees were pulled out of crowd. Officer #377 is being asked questions - refuses to answer. People being herded onto sidewalk.
3:23PM: Large bloc of communists & anarchists marching together. People at 8th & Market got away - no arrests were made.
3:15PM: Police are about to make arrests at 8th & Market. Main march heading towards Van Ness and then back towards Civic Center.
2:20PM: It is confirmed that ANSWER has a permit for the march today - march is planned to eventually wind up back at the Civic Center. People are now sitting in the intersection of Powell & Market. SFPD, CHP, & DPT are having a big meeting at UN Plaza. It seems that police are IDing people from polaroids that were taken of those arrested in the past few days, and sending snatch squads in to pick up specific people.
1:59PM: Bike cops are pulling into the front of the march. Seems to be several major marches happening now.
1:54PM: Head of march is at Market & Leavenworth.
1:52PM: Reports are being made that media is not being allowed near 4th & Market.
1:47PM: A group calling themselves "Operation Dire Distress" comprised of anti-war veterans has just left from the veteran's building at Van Ness & Fell. IAC march is getting ready to leave Civic Center. Reports are coming in the MUNI is shut down east of 4th St. on Market.
1:39PM: 1000s of people on breakaway march headed up Van Ness towards Market.
1:27PM: Breakaway march is moving on 8th. Estimated 30,000 people have gathered at Civic Center about to take to the streets.
