May Day 2001 Explodes Around the World
May Day 2001 Explodes Around the World
As San Franciscans prepare for a Reclaim the Streets party and protest starting tonight at 5:30pm (Justin Herman Plaza), May Day celebrations worldwide are shaking the foundations of the corporation-state. May Day is a historical holiday for anarchist resistance and worker power. This year, intense militarization by police and corporate media in Europe against May Day has guaranteed a police riot during the celebrations. Reports are coming in from around the world about actions and celebrations that took place today:
- A wildcat strike took place in Indiana
- Massive protests and police repression in London
- Militants in New Zealand marched around Wellington, shutting down multinational offices
- In Australia, the Sydney Stock Exchange was protested
- Recent militant protests against Dae Woo Motors brought 20,000 protesters in Korea out on May Day 2001
- There is video coverage of Global Action Day (May 1) in Berlin
- Actions happened in Melbourne, Australia
- A May Day action in solidarity with Quebec City prisoners was held in Montreal
- A massive general strike brought business-as-usual to a close in Greece today as tens of thousands didn't go to work
- In Chicago, solidarity actions for May Day and Quebec City prisoners were held
- A Reclaim the Streets was held in Pittsburgh
- Marxists held a rally in Sri Lanka
- Sketchy details of arrests in Vancouver are coming in
