Free Radio Santa Cruz Interview with John Trudell and Phillip Meshekey
On February 24th, indigenous activist John Trudell and Phillip Meshekey stopped by the studios of Free Radio Santa Cruz for a chat with AC Sandino II. Trudell, a poet, musician, and actor, was a spokesperson for the "Indians of All Tribes" occupation of Alcatraz Island from 1969 to 1971. He then worked with the American Indian Movement (AIM), serving as Chairman of AIM from 1973 to 1979. Meshekey, a native poet and musician, provides a musical introduction to Trudell's public talks. He spoke at Cabrillo College later that night to a packed audience.
John Trudell has been criticized by some natives for his testimony in the case of John Graham, a former AIM member convicted of the murder of Anna Mae Aquash. Native Youth Movement Vancouver announced a boycott of John Trudell in 2005.
