Raids Across New Zealand Target Indigenous and Environmentalist Activists
Goverments invokes powers from a post-9/11 "anti-terror" legislation
On October 15th, 300+ police - in many cases armed - raided houses throughout New Zealand making 17 arrests. The arrestees are all activists in the Tino Rangatiratanga (Maori self-determination), peace and environmental movements. They have initially been multiply charged with various offenses under the Arms Act, relating to alleged past possession of various firearms and ammunition; however, police are considering charges under the 2002 Suppression of Terrorism Act.
Most of those arrested have been denied bail and remain in prison, and 16 out those arrested have received name suppression.
Police shut down traffic in some counties while carrying out the raids. They searched cars, and even a school bus full of children. Reports of harassment have surfaced and police claim that they are planning more arrests.
Mainstream media in New Zealand as well as associated press claim that the police uncovered military style “training camps” during their raids, claiming that the arrestees are linked to a napalm bomb detonation and are terrorist plot to declare war on the country. Solidarity demonstrations in support of the prisoners and to protest the Terrorism Suppression Act have been carried out across New Zealand, as well as in Australia, Germany, and Greece.
Activists are asking for international solidarity demonstrations. A national day of solidarity in new Zealand is being planned, as well as logistical support such as financial donations for the prisoners.
