As Trial Begins, Supporters Concerned About Lack of Vegan Food for Eric McDavid
Jail Seems to Have Forgotten that Eric McDavid Has Commissary
Updated coverage of this story
On Sunday, September 9th, Sacramento Prisoner Support learned that the Sacramento County Jail has cut off Eric's commissary. When he did not receive the items that he expected, Eric checked the lists to see if he had any money in his account-- his name was not on the list. Since the jail stopped bringing Eric vegan meals, commissary was his only opportunity to get a few more dietary essentials beyond what he pulls off his trays.
Now the only food Eric will be eating is the bread and fruit from the meals that all prisoners receive. SPS says, "This blatant attack on Eric's health on the eve of his trial is an outrageous attempt to put his right to due process in jeopardy." SPS is asking for people to call the jail and demand that they begin feeding him vegan meals - again. Meanwhile, jury selection for his trial began on Monday.
In a pre-trial hearing on September 7th, Judge England stressed over and over how "slight" he thought the evidence of entrapment was, and reiterated again and again that he did not want the trial to become an indictment of the FBI, the Justice Department, or of "confidential source" "Anna," the young woman who led Eric into the situation in which he was arrested.
