West Coast Convergence For Climate Action August 8th-14th
American Convergences for Climate Action
During the week of August 8th-14th, hundreds of social justice and environmental activists will come together for regional North American Convergences for Climate Action. Organizers plan to "fight the fossil fuel empire and create truly sustainable, bio-regionally appropriate and community-based responses to climate change." On the west coast, they will gather near the mouth of the Columbia River for 6 days of low impact living and high impact action against the fossil fuel industry. The gathering will be situated near, and will work to support, a community that is fighting a proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal on the Columbia River. The events on the West Coast and in the Southeast are modeled after the 2006 Climate Camp in the UK, which will reemerge this year at Heathrow Airport from August 14th through 21st.

Part networking and activist skills trainings and part community sustainability demonstration sites, the Convergences hope to invigorate the climate movement by pulling together communities of resistance. They "aim to inject an anti-oppression, justice-focused agenda, and to demonstrate examples of truly sustainable, less energy-intensive lives that don't depend on the oppression, thievery, and destruction attached to fossil fuel extraction." On Thursday, July 26th, the West Coast Climate Convergence will hold a film screening and discussions as a "plug-IN" event" in preparation for the Convergence. The event at Station 40 in San Francisco will begin at 7:30pm with an 8:00 screening of "Reclaim Power," which features voices and video from the 2006 Camp for Climate Action and mass direct action at a Drax-owned coal-fired power plant. Discussion will begin at 9:00.
