"Make Out for Environmental Justice" at SF's Queer Center
SF Queers Expose PG&E's Greenwashing
In reaction to PG&E's massive greenwashing campaign, a group of protesters crashed the PG&E press conference at the LGBT center on January 27th, where the company unveiled its newly installed solar panels. The protesters wanted to make it clear that installing solar panels on one building did not make this billion dollar corporation "green." PG&E owns less than 1% solar energy facilities and 2% wind. It has also lobbied against incentives for individuals to install solar panels in the recent past. Photos | Report

The counter-action was called ‘Make Out for Environmental Justice.’ It involved two queer women on stilts who skillfully leaned in for a smooch in front of the LGBT entranceway, while holding a sign reading "Love Solar. Love LGBT. Question PG&E," and a parasol reading "0% Solar." Other signs at the event read: “Green Is Not PG&E” and “PG&E- 0% Solar, 2% Wind, 98% Hot Air.” The activists handed out informational fliers about PG&E to a highly receptive crowd and got friendly honks from numerous cars. Colorful balloons floated about, and a balloon markered with “Green is Not PG&E” was strung to float right alongside the solar panels.

This was the first public action of a guerrilla collective dedicated to exposing PG&E’s massive and misleading PR campaign that has been wallpapering the city for the last few months. The protesters said they were excited about the LGBT center going solar, but that they felt that PG&E’s attempt to celebrate solar and the concept of “Green” smelled disingenuous, given the company's record on the generation of energy from renewable resources.
