Steve Kubby Says He Needs Better Medical Care in Jail
Press Conference to Be Held Before Tuesday Court Date
2/3: See Indybay's Drug War Page for updates
January 30th update: Steve Kubby said today that he is in excruciating pain, vomiting, weak from inability to eat for the last several days, has blood in his urine, and has been without a blanket or even Tylenol. Read more
Medical cannabis patient Steve Kubby, who sufferes from a rare form of adrenal cancer, is still being held in Placer County Jail. After many calls to the jail from supporters, Steve Kubby has been given a blanket and pillow. Kubby feels that he is not receiving adequate medical care. He was moved from the infirmary to solitary confinement.
Michele Kubby is very disappointed by the treatment that her husband has received- the Canadian government had told the family that they would not send Kubby back to the US unless they were sure that he would receive proper medical care. The Marinol that Kubby is being given is helping to control some of his medical symptoms. Because Marinol does not contain the cannabinoids present in the whole cannabis plant, the medication will not inhibit a protein necessary for blood vessel development (this would result in the cancer tissue being denied nutrients and possibly dying). Cannabinoids seem to modulate the catecholamines produced by Steve Kubby's cancerous adrenal glands. He is not being given his special diet, and his blood pressure is not being monitored as regularly as is necessary.
Steve has said that Placer deputies coerced him into signing a waiver that states that he absolves Placer County of any responsibility if he dies in their care, because he has refused to take "conventional" alpha and beta blocker blood pressure medication. Medical marijuana activist Cris Ericson suggests that officials in Placer County are violating several laws in their neglect of Kubby.
Steve is scheduled to have an arraignment hearing in Placer at 1 pm on Tuesday, January 31st. This hearing is going to address Steve's alleged misdemeanor violation of probation. A press conference and rally in support of Steve will be held on Tuesday, January 31st at 12pm at the Placer Co. Superior Court in support of Steve Kubby. In the meantime, San Francisco city supervisor Ross Mirkarimi says he is looking into why Kubby was taken off the plane by SFPD officers at San Francisco International Airport, when the city is supposed to be a haven for medical marijuana patients.
