RNC Coverage: 9/1 & 9/2 - Protests against Corporate Media, Huge Labor Actions & Legal Battles with NYC
9/1 & 9/2 RNC Updates
9/15: Report from a Medic
9/10: The RNC will not confirm or deny reports that it rented the contaminated Pier 57 holding area for detained protesters used by the NYPD. Report from "Gitmo on the Hudson"

9/1: - Bush arrived in NYC tonight and his planned photo-op in Queens was canceled because of potential protesters. Protesting against corporate media, The March on the Media, which was sponsored by FAIR and Paper Tiger Television, was a spirited gathering of more than 2,000 people who opposed the media's role in governmental policy in calling for war. A Big Day For Labor - In the morning, protesters who were holding pink slips reading “The Next Pink Slip Might be Yours!” created a line stretching three miles from Wall Street to Madison Square Garden. That afternoon, thousands more protested at the large labor rally held on 8th Ave. In the evening, approximately 2-300 protested outside the Copacabana, protesting Latin American RNC delegates, shouting "No more death squads, no more coke!"
Legal Updates - A legal battle is ensuing inside NYC courtrooms at the moment between the National Lawyers Guild and the City of New York. Protesters have been detained for over 48 hours -- breaking habeas corpus laws. And while judges have ruled against the city on 3 different occasions, the city remains defiant to the court-mandated immediate release of all jailed protesters.
On other legal fronts, lawyers are fighting the city against the use of a Chelsea Pier, nicknamed "toxic Guantanamo on the Hudson", for holding protesters in pens contaminated with asbestos, battery acid, used motor oil and other unknown chemicals. Medics treating people being released report chemical burns, allergic reactions, severe respiratory problems, skin infections, rashes, welts, wounds and cuts -- all caused by the grossly unsanitary conditions of Pier 57. 9/2: - A judge fined the city $1000 per person for failing to release hundreds of protesters. Crowds have taken to streets and squares this afternoon, including a large contingent of vets at Union Square. Protesters planned to converge at the Madison Square Garden police state at 4 p.m. Pacific time as President Bush took the podium to accept his "coronation." Photos from 9/2 demonstrations
