4/12/2004: Armed gangs still rule most of Haiti and have been taking revenge on former Aristide supporters. The National Lawyers Guild (NLG) sent a delegation to Haiti in late March to monitor human rights abuses. On April 12, Attorney Tom Griffin of the NLG reported to Democracy Now that he saw "hundreds of corpses being dumped by morgues in Haiti and describes bodies coming in with plastic bags over their heads and hands tied behind their backs, piles of corpses burning in fields and pigs eating their flesh" Many Haitians have been fleeing with the Jamaican Observer reporting a growing number of Haitians refugees in the past few days.
On April 5th, Colin Powell visited Haiti in an effort to pressure governments in the region to recognize the US selected La Tortue regime. The US pressure seems to be working; while CARICOM is publicly saying it wants an investigation into Aristide's ouster, it has not made an "official request" to the UN for the probe.
