May 2001 Reclaims the Streets in San Francisco
A large protest and party marched through downtown SF from Justin Herman Plaza to the intersection of Mission & Fourth, where they danced to a live marching band and a mobile sound system. A tall maypole was constructed, and televisions were smashed. A protest in solidarity with Jaggi Singh and other Quebec City political prisoners joined the party. People hung out all night, dancing, juggling, and breathing fire peacefully as police began to face the fact that these street parties are legitimate and will continue. SFPD were present but relaxed and followed as protesters moved around the city. Read more I Audio I Details from Saturday's Reclaim May Day party.
