"People's Strike" Intends to Shut Down DC
People's Strike Intends to Shut Down DC
Anti-capitalists and others will converge on Washington DC with the intention of seriously disrupting business-as-usual in the capital of the United States. Events start on Sep 23, while street demonstrations are set to begin on Sep 27. Planned as a response to the two day, joint World Bank/International Monetary Fund meetings in that city, the organizers hope for blockades, demonstrations, squats, building occupations, and other forms of "non compliance" throughout the city. Already, and unsurprisingly, local politicians and police have whipped the media into a frenzy about allegedly violent demonstrators. Full coverage at DC Indymedia
"In direct opposition to the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and all they represent we will shut down Washington DC on the first day of their Fall Meetings. These institutions exemplify how global capitalism promotes poverty, racism, sexism, environmental destruction, and the concentration of power and wealth in the hands of a few. We are calling for creative, confrontational opposition to capitalism and the crippling effects it has here in DC and around the world. This time around we are not just shutting down the meetings but extending our protests to disrupt all of the institutions headquartered in DC that play a part in this system." - the People's Strike website
