UPDATE, 7pm: The US Supreme Court has rejected Stanley Williams' legal appeal.
UPDATE, NOON MONDAY, 12/12/05: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has rejected Stanley "Tookie" Williams' plea for clemency. Williams is schedule to be executed by lethal injection at San Quentin Prison in Marin at 12:01am tonight. Last minute appeals have been made to Federal Courts, but no stay of the execution is expected at this point. Radio station KPFA (94.1FM) will have updates until approximately 12:30am.
The execution of Stanley Tookie Williams is scheduled to take place at 12:01am on Tuesday morning. Supporters of Williams and the work that he does to show people alternatives to gang life called on the governor to grant clemency. Governor Schwarzenegger has the authority to commute a death sentence to life without parole, but chose not to exercise that right. Events are taking place in cities all over the country today. A 4:00pm March for Tookie took place on Monday in San Jose, from the Mission Church in Santa Clara University to the Cathedral on Market Street. An 8:30pm rally and vigil were held at at San Francisco City Hall on the Polk Street steps; people proceeded by bus at 9PM to San Quentin Prison's East Gate, and will return around 1AM.
A Walk for Abolition of the Death Penalty left San Francisco at 7:00am this morning, and will arrive at San Quentin at approximately 6:00pm. Photos |
