Reclaim MLK - Black Lives Matter Demands Read at Mayor Libby Schaaf’s Office, 1/16/15: photos

by Dave Id
In solidarity with Black Lives Matter activists across the country who set out to "Reclaim Martin Luther King's Legacy" for MLK Day 2015, Oakland's Anti-Police Terrorism Project (APTP) called for 96 hours of direct action in the San Francisco Bay Area. On the first day -- after early morning actions at the Federal building in Oakland, BART stations and the California Supreme Court building in San Francisco -- Black Lives Matter activists stormed new Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf’s office and read the full list of national and local demands set forth by Ferguson Action and Oakland organizers. Libby Schaaf did not present herself to hear the demands.

The Oakland demands include the following:

- We demand that you stop profiling, targeting, stopping, frisking and killing Black & Brown families. We have rights despite what you have been trained to do.

- We demand you end your relationship with Israel. That means no alliance, no cross training, no visits and NO Urban Shield in our city.

- We demand that our community review boards are actually effective and have true jurisdiction over the Oakland Police Department.

- We demand you get out of our schools. Our children are students not criminals or criminals-to-be.

- We demand you - in the name of public service - give up 80% of your department budget to re-fund school libraries, arts programs and education. The true solution to crime prevention.

- We want a complete overhaul of the Police Bill of Rights.

- We demand police officers receive leave WITHOUT pay when under investigation for a questionable shoot.

- We demand an end to your bleed out policy.

- We demand that you FIRE all killer cops.

- We demand that you end the extortion of nightclubs, bars and any other businesses you are strong arming for cash.

- We demand the right to peacefully protest. These are our streets - not yours.

- We demand the immediate end to the harassment of the homeless. These are their streets - not yours.

On the following Monday, MLK Day, many of these same activists demonstrated before dawn in front of Libby Schaaf’s home off of Park Blvd in the tony Oakmore neighborhood in the Oakland hills. The demands were read again and, although her husband did come to the front door for a few minutes at the end of the protest, Libby Schaaf herself chose to remain inside and not show herself.

The idea behind reclaiming MLK's legacy is to rescue it from the sanitized version whereby King has been painted by liberals for decades as a make-nice or passive historical figure rather than the defiant radical fighting for justice that he actually was in his time. MLK was very much controversial and often despised, not at all adored by the majority of whites in America, at the time of his assassination.

APTP actions were organized using a spokescouncil/affinity group model, allowing for a diversity of actions in a wide variety of locations. In all, hundreds of activists organized over two dozen actions which brought out a diverse group of thousands committed to racial and economic equality in the Bay Area and across the United States.

Can someone explain what a, "Bleed out" policy is?

Would Martin Luther King have made 12 demands like that? MLK would never list a bunch of demands like that. Listing a bunch of demands guarantees nothing will be done. Who is the organizer who allowed a long list of demands?
