Santa Cruz Restaurant O'mei Closes After Indybay Article

by Swift Justice
O'mei Restaurant in Santa Cruz has closed "for now," a week after an investigative article on Indybay by Lynda Carson exposed the owner as a supporter of David Duke, the former Imperial Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Roger F. Grigsby, O'mei's owner and founding chef, gave $500 to David Duke’s U.S. Senate campaign in 2016. People were rightly outraged.

From Thomas Leavitt:

Wow. O'mei is now closed. Bet the owner now regrets his contribution to the David Duke 2016 campaign for U.S. Senate. I feel sorry for his employees though, they paid the price for his obnoxious politics and views. I saw another post on Nextdoor saying he harassed a professor, Dr. Omosupe, at Cabrillo about her social justice oriented English curriculum, so this seems par for the course.

-----

And here I had been not going for a long, long time because of how my family was treated. I guess some things don't change.

--

Maybe if they had paid attention to her English class, they wouldn't have put an apostrophe into a possessive its.

--

I feel sorry for those who worked there. I don't feel sorry for him. He got called on his shit and now he's ostensibly blaming the "fake news media." Sound familiar?

BTW - that "slanderous internet rumor" is, of course, publicly-accessible data. If he showed some integrity and 'fessed up, he'd be in a much better place right now.

--

Justice took its damn time. A friend made me stop going there almost thirty years ago. He advertised on Rush Limbaugh. Seems almost quaintly sinful by today's standards.

“I refuse to stay at a venue where the owner supports the likes of David Duke and his messages of hate.”
- Jake Rudh

Following a City Pages report that the North Loop bar’s owner, Julius De Roma, donated $500 to former KKK leader and current racist David Duke’s 2016 Senate campaign, Jake Rudh announced on Facebook that Transmission, his popular weekly dance night, will no longer at take place at Jäger.

In addition to hosting the long-running new wave/post-punk dance night, Rudh is also an on-air DJ at 89.3 the Current.

Jake Rudh wrote:

Transmission will not be taking place this Wednesday at Clubhouse Jager. Nor will it ever take place there again.

Like many of you, I was shocked and appalled to hear the news about the venue's owner this morning.

I refuse to stay at a venue where the owner supports the likes of David Duke and his messages of hate.

I thank all of those who have come to the venue to support myself, Transmission and it's hardworking staff. This is not the end of the weekly dance night, but it very much is at Clubhouse Jager.

Bigotry, hate, violence, and racism has no place at Transmission or anywhere on this planet.

If he disrespected Dr. Omosupe in anyway I am sure he was set straight. Dr. Omosupe is a brilliant woman and does not take shit from anyone, specially misogynistic, racists who think that their white privilege give them the right to insult or degrade others. If I was upset to learn there was an established business supporting hate, now I am double infuriated that he would try to disrespect an amazing human as Dr. Omosupe. Hope she drilled a new one on him. She can do that with just one look. What an ignorant fool that man turned out to be
SANTA CRUZ (KPIX) — A Santa Cruz restaurant is shut down for what the owner is calling “political terrorism.”

Some employees and patrons boycotted the Chinese restaurant, after public records obtained by Indybay revealed restaurant owner Roger Grigsby gave $500 to David Duke’s campaign last year.

Duke ran for a US Senate seat in Louisiana and lost. He is an avowed white nationalist, anti-Semite and former Imperial Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.

Now, after 38 years in business, Grigsby’s restaurant, O’Mei on Mission Street is closed.

There is a sign in the window telling patrons, “O’Mei has come under attack. Slanderous and malicious Internet rumors concerning this business, it’s owner, and staff have forced us to close for now.”

Grigsby sent KPIX an e-mail, saying, in part:

We are just a token in a much larger process of terrorizing white European Americans into silence in what has come to be known as the “war on whites.” My campaign contribution was to one of the men supporting European American civil rights.

It is unclear if or when the restaurant will reopen.

...as I do, stated elsewhere on Indybay https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2017/08/17/18801676.php?show_comments=1#18802351 , I KNOW that when Almar Grill was open Roger was NOT, at the time, the owner of O'mei, but had sold it to a partner. That was about 15-20 years ago. It APPEARS the business fell back in his lap seeing he again claims ownership, and I suspect Indybay's expose didn't really put him out of business, but allowed him to RETIRE the business with a perfect excuse.

"Lefties made him do it."

Just sayin'.

I WONDER if he can get a tax-writedown, or has insurance that would cover it? Knowing Roger, that would be just like him. He's quite crafty. When he opened the first O'mei on campus at the Kresge Town Hall someone scrawled "Capitalists off campus" on the building, as it was the first off-campus private business ever at UCSC. He responded by looking up the average income of a UCSC student's parents and publicizing it... $100,000 per parent. in the early 1980s. I think he made his point about WHO were the capitalists, and that point is just as relevant now. Few students at UCSC have the right to complain about capitalists unless they're complaining about their mommy and daddy's capitalist-derived ability to afford to send them to UC too.

I think Roger is getting the last hearty laugh here. Except I've never seen him laugh. He just gets an evil little smile. I remember it well.

There is no such thing as Alice Shen company we don't know who that is. Shen's Gallery is a sole entity without being involved with other businesses. The owner of Shen's Gallery does not have any ownership or financial tie to Omei restaurant for over 15 years. Please be careful about spreading suspicious false news.
