Occupy Santa Cruz Holds First General Assembly, Decides on Occupation of San Lorenzo Park

by ~Bradley (bradley [at] riseup.net)
Occupy Santa Cruz, a local convergence in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street, held it's first General Assembly on October 4th at Laurel Park in Santa Cruz. Hundreds of people gathered in the park, prior to the evening rain, and decided by consensus to launch an occupation at San Lorenzo Park starting Thursday, October 6th at 10am.

On September 17th, over one thousand demonstrators poured into New York City's financial district to confront corporate greed by establishing an ongoing presence, day and night, in lower Manhattan. The idea was to create an American Tahir Square on Wall Street. Police blocked marchers from reaching Wall Street, but hundreds persisted and set up camp in Zuccotti Park, now dubbed Liberty Plaza.

Occupy Santa Cruz suggests that people bring tents and tarps for the occupation at San Lorenzo Park starting October 6th at 10am, and be ready for a march at 3:30pm. It was also proposed that there be a nightly General Assembly at San Lorenzo Park at 6pm with a main GA on either Saturday or Sunday.

The following working groups were established to support Occupy Santa Cruz:

• Housing
• Setup/Cleanup
• Accessibility/Safer Space
• Music/Art
• Donations: Food/Finance
• Outreach
• Legal
• Media
• Philosophy/Strategy

People are encouraged to attend General Assembly meetings and participate in a working group.

Re: the photos- I am reeling in all these images of our spirits there in the early wake of consciousness to form a world of real economies, self run, self wrought.! Bradley, like Linda I think these are wonderfully done.

Here is a link to a video I shot of the opening of the General Assembly on October 5th, including the reading of the statement and the setting up of ground rules of mutual respect and cooperation. It was a wonderful example of how to set up an occupation, and actually shift our experience of the world.
Enjoy!

WHERE ARE THE CORPORATE GREED ISSUES??

surely someone can think of some thing other than "gmo" i personally would gripe about the e-coli contaminated fruits and veggies being grown outside our borders that we consume in the winter time,(and yes i know about the american e-coli issues), or stuff like that but i have not heard one issue yet just "corporate greed", if you really want to know the reason for the money pinch, well mainly its the std/drug healthcare bills here and overseas, the ashakenazi political pres. front of the last 40 years neglected sephardic foreign organized drug crime, which fed the std rate to its current level, so std health care is causing economic shortcomings would wide, you guys should protest foreign organized drug crime.
