SF's HOW-WIMPY Street Faire,

by more prudish than cops (nakity [at] yahoogroups.com)
..................
Cops tolerate semi-nude peacenik, but Howard Street Faire hassles him anyway.
...................
Several SUN members attended the "How Weird" Street Faire, on Howard Street, SF,
on Sunday, 4 May 2008; hoping to demonstrate for peace.

Only two of them actually tried to go "nude4peace".
San Francisco Police officers ordered a fully nude demonstrator to "cover up";
so he put on a red jockstrap (which covers the genitals but leaves the butt bare).
Okay, no further problem.

By the time the cops arrived, the other demonstrator was merely semi-nude.
On his front, he wore a protest sign, hanging from a belt, so that the sign concealed his genitals.
But he was still bare behind the sign, and his butt remained quite bare.
After an officer spoke to him, he understood that his present costume would be ignored
(thus barely tolerated). But that police would arrest him if he shifted the sign so that his front was visible.
(For example, if he were to rotate the belt, so that the sign would cover his butt instead of his front.)

After the police officers had walked away, an angry civilian harassed the demonstrators.
Claiming to represent the H.W. Faire organization, he objected even to semi-nudity.
Is bare butt still a big deal to him, even as 21st century SF cops ignore it?
Or does he feel that a protest sign isn't enough covering for the male genitals?
Whatever his hang-up, he rejected the
moderate compromise (between freedom and order) which the cops had tacitly approved.

Upon hearing this extreme anti-freedom policy of censorship,
SUN's spokesman
protested by boycotting the remainder of the Faire.

Senior Unlimited Nudes (SUN) hopes that the Faire's board will, in the next nine months,
re-consider this censorship policy.
As long as this policy persists HOW WEIRD
amounts to
HOW RIGHTWING.

[ COMMENTS by George:]

I kind of suspected that was the direction the
How Not Very Weird Fair was heading.
Unlike most street fairs, the admission was not voluntary.
To me that means that attendees are business invitees, and subject to the whims of the organizer (No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service).
Also, no matter what Tortuga thinks, the area is not SOMA, it's the Financial District. It is an area that is planning a new Transbay Terminal and several of the tallest buildings in San Francisco, high rises. They are trying to set themselves up for that crowd.
But today, as we know, that crowd really doesn't have a problem with nudity. For example, the St. Stupid's Day Parade and the Bare-to-Breakers race. So, like you, I was still to a lesser extent surprised by promoters' prudishness.

Naturally,
George Davis

I arrived at the "How Weird Street Faire" around 2 pm.
To qualify at the entrance gate for the $5 (costumed) fee
(instead of the $10 uncostumed) fee,
without provoking a rejection by arriving nude,
I arrived in a blue t-shirt and a red, string-bikini bottom. This attire, while only a little "weird", got me through the gate with no problem.

I'd planned on taking off my shirt and bikini bottom soon after going through the gate, but the first thing I did was remove my shirt. And, oddly enough, even this minimally "weird" attire -- a red, string-bikini bottom -- was enough to attract lots of attention from picture-takers and random passersby. That should give you some idea of how utterly boring this street faire was this year.

There were hundreds of conservatively-dressed people with strollers and small children roaming the streets. Apparently the faire organizers have decided that they prefer that the event cater to boring middle-class breeders rather than to live up to its name. And so, when a few people tried to liven up this dull, watered-down event by showing a little nudity, the faire staff went into full Prude-mode.

Who's afraid of public nudity?

George Davis, the naked former mayoral candidate , was arrested again
-- on May Day, no less -- and has reached a scientific conclusion:

"From my field experience with public nudity, I can state that the only people who have emotional problems with public nudity are angry people, excessively authoritarian personalities, and fundamentalist religious nut cases."

Oh, and he thinks Pope John Paul II was a big fan of nudity.

You can read his entire letter after the jump.

........

Open letter from George Davis:

“I didn’t know that they arrested writers in San Francisco.” said my “homeless” cellmate who didn’t care if he slept on the sidewalk or a county jail cell floor in a city that didn’t care either.

May 1, 2008 was my sixth arrest by police by police count for public nudity to create a Free Body Culture political movement. This was my tenth arrest from a civilian perspective that any time you are in a locked police room, you are under arrest. Since nudity is not a crime in California unless a person is lewd and San Francisco juries tend to be fair and reasonable, the District Attorney has consistently discharged all citations, including this May 1 arrest.

I have to admit to some past ambiguity to my efforts to create a Free Body Culture movement to end the mentally regressive nudity taboo. This time I was arrested for organizing a book signing for my new book, Weapons of Mass Deception. This is clearly a very political book that, besides advocating for a European styled FKK Free Body Culture movement, is highly critical of the San Francisco political machine, the San Francisco mayor, San Francisco Police Department, the American Military-Industrial Complex, the American Prison-Industrial Complex, and other contemporary political issues. Now, clearly, I am being arrested to suppress these ideas.

On a personal level, most people consider me a quiet, polite, slightly intellectual, sometimes funny guy. If there was a line formed of people who didn’t think nudity was a big deal, I could be placed in front of that line. Obviously, my arrests show that I am wrong. This is a big deal.

From my field experience with public nudity, I can state that the only people who have emotional problems with public nudity are angry people, excessively authoritarian personalities, and fundamentalist religious nut cases. In San Francisco, this is at most maybe 2% of the population. Admittedly, these people are squeaky wheels. Are these the people you want to boss you around? Are these the people that you want to dominate the political sphere or your life?

By the way, some of the biggest nudist supporters are thinking religious people
like Pope John Paul II.

If you have any critical doubts about the truth of what I have written, I hope you take efforts to learn more about nudism and the nudity taboo. I plan to add a forum page to the Internet site, http://www.freebodyculture.com. In fact, the first topic I would like to put up would be the answer to the question, “What harm would befall a child who saw a nude adult?” I don’t have an intelligent answer other than “none”. To contribute to the forum, email: george [at] fkkfreebodyculture.com.

I plan to return to Fisherman’s Wharf on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 and thereafter to the Southeast corner of Beach and Taylor by the statue of St. Francis from noon-3, weather and no schedule conflicts permitting, to continue work on educating people on the FKK Free Body Culture movement. See you there.

Photozella – Group walk/run at Bay to Breakers

http://www.ingbaytobreakers.com/main.html

......

Date: Sunday May 18, 2008 –
A MORNING EVENT

Main meeting Place: On the lawn at the start of the park panhandle at Fell St and Baker St. This point is about half way along the complete official route which is about 8 miles long. Read the details of meet-up options below. You can also join the group as it is moving along if you are late. To find a transit route to get to the meeting place try: http://www.sfmta.com

Time: Meet at about 10 AM when we will prepare (getting decorated) and by 10:30 or 10:45 we expect to start moving as a group (walking) through Golden Gate Park. Get to the meeting place earlier and watch the fastest runners pass this spot. We should be able to find each other becasue of all the orange props etc people will have.

Contacts on the day:
Andy - 510-912-0985
He will be providing support, bringing extra props, a wagon, and will be available to phone if you are looking for the group but cannot find it. He will not walk with the group but will be nearby in case anyone needs anything.

Description: Bay to Breakers is a marathon-like run that thousands participate in. Along with the serious runners there are also many groups and individuals who wear funny costumes or nothing at all. Hundreds run nude at every run and it is considered normal and acceptable. Just stay on the route. The Photozella group is getting together to walk the 2nd half of the course, a pleasant and level path through Golden Gate Park. Anyone can join us - just show up. We will have some kind of pull-wagon so you do not have to lug a knap-sack. This is a great way to experience being naked outdoors in the city in the safety of a group at an event where it is acceptable.

Group Theme: Obviously our theme is bodyfreedom, so the more naked you can be, the better. That includes footwear, so sandals that are good for walking are preferred. Women can be top-free if you do not feel ready for complete nudity. Decorate your bodies with an orange theme (any shades from red to yellow). Think about what you can wear or add to your body but still technicially leave you naked. But try to use orangey items. Funny hats, sunglasses, beads, strips of material tied to your arms. Top-free women could wear orange panties, for example. A bit of bodypaint is an idea too. Someone from our group will bring some extra paint and props. If you wish, write "Photozella" on your body somewhere, but I do not want to turn this into a big promo thing for Photozella - just do the event and enjoy yourself. But if anyone should ask what the group is about, all you have to say is that it is a bodyfreedom group that goes on nature excursions to do
photography. Tell them to Google "photozella".

Process Options:
If you do not want to do the whole route nor register with B2B just show up at our meeting place and join our group. Most people in the run do register with the Bay to Breakers event so that they have an Official Runner Number, even if they know they will poop out early in the race and walk the rest of the way (the vast majority of people). The cost is $48 and goes to charity and needs to be done before May 14. And the packet you get needs to be picked up at 99 Grove St BEFORE THE RACE DAY. Go to their website and read everything carefully if you intend to do the whole registration thing.
http://www.ingbaytobreakers.com

I would anticiapte that some of us will want to run at the start, and then when the meeting place is reached, join the group and wait for others to arrive and catch up.

There is one person who has indicated he will run the whole course, then backtrack through the park to join the group. So that is another option if you are in that kind of physical shape.

The race starts at 8 AM and it takes an hour or so for the whole mass of people to move through the starting gate. So I am assuming 10 or 10:30 will be a good time to congregate at the park panhandle at Fell and Baker St.

By the time we get there, the finish of the route is diverted towards Spreckels Lake in the park and we will have to gauge how long we can remain nude as we hang out tegether and rest.

Other Considerations: You may want to put sunscreen on your whole body while still at home and let it soak in for 15 minutes before putting any clothes on. Then you'll be set for the morning and only have to be concerned with decorating yourself once at the meeting place. Expect to be photographed as this is a public parade of sorts. Bring whatever water and snacks you need to keep going. Let's set a good example and not consume alcohol.

Open letter from George Davis, writer/
”naked yoga guy”
Please distribute.
“First the sentence, then the trial.”
-- Red Queen, Alice in Wonderland.
“First the sentence, then no trial.”
-- Captain James Dudley,
San Francisco Police Department
– Central Station

The nudity taboo is a mass deception. Yes, I realize that the ultimate goal of a Free Body Culture to bring about more critical thinking and reason on the irrational mind/body relationship is a harder sell than it should be.
The Free Body Culture (a 102 year-old mainstream movement) has occurred in Europe and recently in London .
It’s time for it to happen here.
Besides my May 1 [ Mayu Day 2008]arrest by the SFPD,
I was again arrested on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at Fisherman’s Wharf.
I was taken to a cell at 850 Bryant as a punitive action for “booking” and about a 5 hour intake “processing.” The next day, [in court,] the case was once again immediately discharged by the DA.
This is a discretionary punitive sentence with no trial, because no jury of my San Francisco peers would ever convict.
On Sunday, May 11, I was out with a few friends again. It was too cold (with the wind) to continue for more than half an hour. After bundling-up, a police car pulled-up and the officers told us that they were under orders from Captain James Dudley to arrest me for nudity. To the best of their knowledge, there was no higher authority than Captain Dudley ordering the arrest. Since we were not undressed, they drove away.

The SFPD is more than aware that this nudity is for a political education campaign for the FKK Free Body Culture movement. The SFPD is more than aware that nudity is not a crime in California unless one is lewd or blocking traffic. Yet, they still bypass the will of the legal and court systems and continue to harass me. On the upside, many of the police in the field are figuring out what I am doing and are okay with it, but they have to follow their orders.

I can certainly prove that command orders for my harassment have come from Captain James Dudley, Central Station. Whether he is acting from a higher police command or on his own initiative has not been revealed to me. Can such a low level bureaucrat suppress a legitimate, historic, and non-violent political movement?
I hope the command staff of the SFPD, the OCC, City Attorney, and mayor’s office is investigating these allegations. I have nothing personally against Captain James Dudley, but he should be informed of the limitations of his power or removed from his position.

Yes, I know that I can spend a lot of time and effort to sue the SFPD and City of San Francisco for damages for false imprisonment, battery, harassment, and other tort actions and probably collect a decent sized judgment.
Believe it or not, there are manipulative people in the City of San Francisco, a Five Billion dollar/year corporation, that don’t mind losing a few hundred thousand dollars (pocket change) to suppress the ideas of a Free Body Culture movement.
Sincerely, suing the City is a waste of both of our times. It’s something I don’t want to pursue. I truly only want to continue the FKK Free Body Culture education campaign and distribute my books, Naked Yoga and Weapons of Mass Deception, unhindered.
My thinking is national and global in outlook.
My political/social/cultural interest is not in the petty backwater provincialism of certain sectors of some City of San Francisco political fiefdoms.
By the way, the right to be nude is your right also, whether-or-not you want to exercise it. Get rid of the nudity taboo and you have a better body consciousness and one less thing to worry about.
For what it’s worth, most of the tourists love the public nudity.
They haven’t seen it before. It gives them something to think and talk about. [...]
This activity is on a block with a neglected statue of St. Francis and derelicts lying on the sidewalk. The space is hundreds of feet from any commercial enterprises.
My specific plans are to show up at noon (weather and schedule permitting) and talk to people about the Free Body Culture movement.
In addition, as material for my next book, I plan to tell people stories about St. Francis and Benny Bufano, the sculptor of the St. Francis statue at the corner of Beach and Taylor. These are appealing stories.
St. Francis is the Buddha of Christianity. These include tales of his finding God while kissing a leper, going naked before his father and town of Assisi to announce his asceticism, and his evolving a unity with nature.
Benny Bufano also has his share of tales like slicing off his trigger finger and mailing it to Woodrow Wilson to share his opinion on the U.S. entry into World War I.
The methods that I am using to eliminate the nudity taboo are similar to those used by Vincent Bethell, who was also thrown in jail, to end the nudity taboo in London . The London campaign has largely been accomplished by his work plus an art campaign of placing anatomically correct statues of nude men and women in public spaces all over London .
The nudity taboo, besides being stupid, is easy to get rid of.
Shouldn’t San Francisco ’s cultural sophistication be equal to London ’s?

My next scheduled day at Fisherman’s Wharf is
Thursday,
May 15, 2008, noon,
corner of Taylor/Beach by the statue of St. Francis.

Naturally,
George Davis
