Castro Nude Walkabout
[reported by George Davis ]

On Friday, May 16, 2008 several prominent public nudists,
most of whom have walked the Castro [before],
met for a family style Chinese dinner in the neighborhood.
The group included Lloyd, Marshall, Woody, Bill, Rusty, Mick, Marvin, Peter and a few others.
[....]

We placed our clothes in a car parked near 18th and Castro.
We did a slow walk down 18th Street and along the West Side of Castro Street towards Market.

As usual, we were greeted with cheerful thumbs-up attitudes.
Several people posed in photographs with us,
including Sister Gina Tonic of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
Along the way, many people thought we were connected with that Sunday’s Bay-to-Breakers Race [May 18].

When we got to the corner of Castro and Market, we saw eight police across the street. That was an unusually high police presence, and probably not meant for us. We were ordered to "dress and move-on." Rusty told the officers that what we were doing was not illegal, but they were not open to dialogue.

We turned around and walked on Castro toward 18th Street . At 18th, a squad car pulled-up. An officer told us to wait here while she went somewhere. Those who had clothes put on some kind of Speedo-type [minimal] garb and waited. Those, like myself, who didn’t bring spare clothes, left the scene.

All of us met at the car and retired from the field for about 20 minutes.

Rusty, Lloyd, Woody, and Mick were up for another walk.
I remained clothed for this walk and agreed to run legal interference if there were other police issues. We walked around for about an hour amiably chatting with ourselves and people on the street.

At about 11:00pm, a police car pulls-up. They "detained" us and took our names and addresses. We had a brief conversation with one of the officers. He said that we were a waste of police time.
We told him that we were in complete and total agreement on that,
and he shouldn’t answer those calls.

He said that the police answer all calls. We pointed out that that was not true. For example, if some one smashed a car window and stole $2,000 worth of GPS, Stereo, and telephone equipment, the police won’t answer the call. Isn’t that a real crime? The crime victim has to go to the police station to fill out a report for police statistics and insurance recovery purposes.
We talked with the police a little more on the mass deception of the nudity taboo and the politics of body freedom. They at least got to understand our viewpoints. We were "undetained".
Tired by now, we went home.

Normally, there isn’t this much police presence or interest in the Castro. But the moral police ("Father Superiors") are still alive and well.
