4/9, SF - three nudes demonstrate for human rights

I met Rusty and Lloyd at 12:30pm on April 9 [Wednesday]
for the Nude Olympic Torch Run at Pier 1.
I brought a 4-foot white torch with “HUMAN RIGHTS” written on it in red acrylic lettering, which was made by a theatrical stage prop artist.
Rusty brought along a couple of great looking torches
that he made out of toilet plungers (new).
We also had a couple of olive branches.
donated by a Ferry Building merchant.

Our original plan was to run a shadow event like the Bay-to-Breakers footrace. We would let the main Official Olympic Torch event pass and then disrobe and follow behind. On the street, if possible, otherwise we would run on the perimeter sidewalk.
About 1:15pm, I noticed that everyone was going into the street. We disrobed.
At that point, two policemen approached us, dressed in blue civilian looking windbreakers; and one said, “Get Dressed!”
I explained to them, “We are prominent public nudists.
In fact, I ran for mayor of San Francisco last year on a nudity platform. (I showed him some 2007 campaign literature and campaign buttons.)
The officer said, “I don’t care. Get dressed.”
I said, “That is an unlawful order. I want to know who is issuing it to you?”
The officer made a cell phone call.
They then both walked away.
That was our first and last police issue of the day.

We walked onto the Embarcadero. It was too crowded to run.
Rusty suggested that we do a processional walk.
We were greeted by almost universal cheers and thumbs-up along the whole route.
We were photographed and interviewed by all sorts of media and people. Many wanted to pose for photos with us, and got their wish.
On the interviews, we kept to a simple message.
The almost universal first question was, “Why nude?”
Our reply was, “To point out that the original Olympics were nude events.” I would then point to the wording on our Torch and say,
“We also want to point out that we support Human Rights for everyone, everywhere.”

We eventually learned that the Official Torch Run had been moved
elsewhere.
About 3:30pm, I started getting cold, Rusty had other work projects, and Lloyd wanted to call it in too. So we got dressed.
For the three of us nudes4peace,
this political demo was a fun and interesting experience.
