Victor Arnautoff's Mural Survives SF School Board's Attack

by Stop Attacks on Arnautoff & Art
Judge Anne-Christine Massullo overturned the reactionary San Francisco School Board's decision to cover-up the beautiful, anti-racist murals at George Washington High School painted in 1936 by a victim of anti-Communist witchhunts, Victor Arnautoff, and ordered a meet and confer of the school and the GWHS Alumni Association before August 26, 2021 on the missing environmental review. The reactionary San Francisco school board wanted to spend $800,000 to cover up the murals. They had originally voted to destroy the murals, but their anti-culture censorhip was rejected by the community, so they changed their tune to a cover up, a profound waste of much needed tax dollars to educate the workingclass, the overwhelming majority of San Francisco public school students, who in the past did not do well on the standardized tests and now that they lost ground with Zoom school at home, they need special tutoring to be brought up to grade level.

As the article states, there is widespread support in the African-American community for the murals, from Reverend Amos Brown, President of San Francisco chapter of the NAACP, to actor Danny Glover.

For more on the support for the murals, see https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2020/02/29/18831161.php

There are lots of good links to both articles, with videos, explaining the whole story on these murals and the reactionary anti-education, anti-labor school board.

For those of us who easily remember the anti-Communist witchhunts of the 1950s-1960s, Victor Arnautoff was a hero. We will never join with the likes of reactionary anti-Communist witchhunter, the late president Richard Nixon, to attack Victor Arnautoff and his outstanding political art. This is a class society and mouthpieces of the capitalist class such as Richard Nixon and their contemporaries who attack the art of Victor Arnautoff, are no friends of the workingclass.
