[* Tortuga's rant on Franglish
political correctness:
In U.S. English, among white leftists,
the word "indigenous" is often considered
to be more "politically correct"
than the word "native".
But "indigenous" merely echoes "indigene"
[in-di-ZHEN, with accent grave],
the French equivalent of "native".
And some French leftists see "indigene" as colonialist,
hence politically incorrect ,
so they try to twist their toungues around
"autochthone" and "autochthonous" (whew!).
Tortuga thinks this Franglish
word-game is pointless.
In English, "native" is okay, and hella easier to pronounce and spell.
If you want to honor the native tribes and communities of North America (Native American "Indian", Aleut, Inuit, etc.), you can follow the Canadian example --
by calling these groups "the First Nations" of our country and our continent. ]
