Homosexuality in Film
"The History of Homosexuality in Film" (GLST-11). This year Brokeback Mountain is set to make a major "queer" breakthrough at the Academy Awards, but what about the films that came before it? This course will give students an overview of the representations of LGBTQ identities in the cinema, from the silent era to the "Brokeback" present. Using The Celluloid Closet as a main text, students will begin by uncovering homosexual subtexts in classic Hollywood films and the history/politics attached to these early images. As the class progresses, students will explore films made by and for the LGBTQ community, in tandem with prominent queer film theories and critiques. Hollywood coding, the sissy, the queer monster, international "queer" cinema, and camp are among the topics that will be discussed —
all with the objective of giving voice to the "love that dare not speak its name."
The course is offered through City College (everyone is welcome to register and attend).
Meets Mondays, 6:15-9:35pm.
C/V [ Castro Valley] Campus, 1220 Noe Street, Room 102.

KLUBSTiTUTE/TrannyshackSTiTUTE
@ Center for Sex & Culture
and The Stud Bar
KLUBSTiTUTE Archive Show & Reunion Party followed by TrannyShackSTiTUTE.
Sixteen years after opening an alternative club for wacky themed performances and imaginative explorations of creativity, the klub kids gather again for two fun-filled events in San Francisco's seedy SOMA neighborhood.
HaveYouSeenMe?STiTUTE is an archive show, reunion party and media orgy
with performances (open to the public) at the Center For Sex & Culture.
Then stumble down the street to the Stud at 9th & Harrison for TrannyshackSTiTUTE
with crossover stars of both KLUBSTiTUTE & Trannyshack fame. Re-defining who and what art is and can be has been a passion for many artists and performers in the underground scene of SF.
Sixteen years ago (1990) Diet Popstitute along with other members of the infamous Popstitutes opened KLUBSTiTUTE which begat PLAYSTiTUTE, The KLUBSTiTUTE KOLLECTiVE, The Virgin Queen Contest, PROMSTiTUTE, The Faux Queen Pageant and countless other tragedies infecting the stale nightlife and reinvigorating zany fun into the cold netherworld of Sodom by the Bay.
"The open mikes gave way to a mixture of rock bands, spoken word, DJ/dancing, theatrical productions, musical ensembles and zany theme nights. In no time the club became a favorite of queers, punks, literati, glitterati, differently gendered persons and political activists," says Alvin Orloff, aka DJ Alvin A-Go-Go and author of GutterBoy.
"One of my fondest memories was when Juanita MORE! got her new body suit and was running through the club as fast as she could looking naked with just a whisper of fabric and high heels. With a crowd that great the show was just icing on the cake," says Sister Kitty Catalyst OCP, uber-nun and homo-propagandist.
...
HaveYouSeenMe?STiTUTE will feature performances by 2005 Faux Queen Hoku Mama Swamp, Trixxie Carr, Bea Dazzler, Windy Plains, Cricket Bardot and femcee Anita Cocktail (more performers will be updated on our website) plus DJ Pusspuss and delightful refreshments.
$4.98 cheap! 9pm doors, 10pm show, Tue., Jan. 24, at the Center For Sex & Culture,
398 11th St at Harrison.
...
Then stumble two blocks away for TrannyshackSTiTUTE. Crossover stars of both KLUBSTiTUTE & Trannyhack fame scheduled to perform include SupposiTori Spelling, Deena Davenport's tribute to Lois Turd 3000 with Johnny Kat & Timmy Spence, Ethel Merman, Princess Kennedy, Ruby Toosday and femceed by the effervescent Heklina and Deena Davenport. (more performers will be updated on our website) plus Door Mistress Chocolate and DJ Derek.
Show at midnight, $7 cover. The Stud, 9th & Harrison, SF [ near BAR office].
