Santa Cruz Dismantles Camp of Hundreds of the Houseless
The City of Santa Cruz, CA, in a county with the second highest rent in the country, is evicting an estimated 300 people living in wall-to-wall tents running along a riverbed right next to this largely wealthy city’s downtown. The camp, in existence for about three years, was sanctioned by the City; houseless people were directed to go there because the City didn’t have enough beds. Now, the City cites sanitation, drug use and complaints as reasons for closing the Benchlands camp. “This never...

Gilroy, CA, August 16, 2022 — On Monday evening, the Gilroy City Council unanimously voted to take a position opposing the Sargent Quarry Project, a planned 403-acre sand and gravel mining operation that would be located just outside of the City’s jurisdiction. The council moved to produce a resolution urging Santa Clara County officials to deny approval of permits for the mine, which threatens open space lands that are held sacred by a local Indigenous tribe and have also been deemed critica...

Letter to Mayor Brunner on City Council's Latest Homeless Hayride
I wrote a letter to Mayor Brunner regarding the City's end run around human decency in the Benchlands. Item 19 is a double-barreled blast at those outside--showcasing an empty report that has no significant expansion of shelter for the planned Benchlands demolition. As well as a seizure of homeless funding--using it as demolition money....

Preparing to Defend the Likely Sweeps
We did a little tabling downtown yesterday, distributing flyers and circulating petitions encouraging activists to rise up again in support of basic justice for those outside. We were testing the waters for Pacific Ave. passersby. The literature challenged the false "all is well--we've got shelter & housing for those outside" narrative. The flyers and petition set out a more truthful counter-narrative. Our ultimate goal is to provide support for resistance to Benchlands removal at the end...
