Delta smelt numbers reach new low as Trump admin. aims to increase pumping
There “is no easy answer” why the smelt declined even in a record water year when biologists would have expected a rebound, according to Dr. Peter B Moyle, Distinguished Professor, Emeritus, at the Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology, Center for Watershed Sciences, UC Davis. “The answer is that we really don't know. The best explanation I can think of is that numbers are so low that an increase (or decrease) in the index would not be detectable with the FMT sampling,” he...

Protect Monterey County to Appeal Decision on Measure Z's Ban on Harmful Oil Industry Practices
MONTEREY, Calif., December 29, 2017 — Protect Monterey County and its attorneys announced that they will appeal yesterday’s Monterey County Superior Court decision that overturns portions of Measure Z. Last year Monterey County voters passed Measure Z, an initiative that bans hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”), prohibits new oil wells and phases out oil-industry wastewater injection wells....

'The Twelve Days of Jerry' Christmas Song and Animation
As a satirical songwriter, I really appreciate a well-written and nicely-performed song. As Jerry Brown keeps promoting his pro-Big Oil and pro-Big Gas environmental policies after receiving over $9.8 million from oil and gas companies and utilities, Consumer Watchdog released an animation featuring Governor Jerry Brown and an updated "Twelve Days of Christmas" song highlighting his support for fossil fuels and dirty energy policies. If you didn't think Jerry Brown could dance, watch him joyo...

Secretary Zinke urged to recover $84.8 million misspent on Delta Tunnels
To date, nobody involved in the Delta Tunnels illegal funding scheme has been reprimanded, fired or held accountable — nor have any measures been taken to recover the money ripped off from the taxpayers to support the unpopular California WaterFix....

Report reveals L.A. oil cos. have used 49,000 tons of toxic chemicals since 2013
David Braun of Californians Against Fracking and the Rootskeeper said, “I think it's notable that 20 million pounds of hydrochloric acid and 10 million pounds of hydrofluoric acid were used in Los Angeles County in a 3 year period in oil extraction operations.”...

Delta Caucus Town Hall Challenges Financial Feasibility of Delta Tunnels
Tim Neuharth, owner of Steamboat Acres Farms on the North Delta, said, “A couple of times Ms. Messer mentioned that this was all about the ecological factors in the Delta. My common sense approach to that and question as a farmer is, how do you justify that by taking more water out of the Delta?”...

Bay Area Idle No More activist reflects on protesting Governor Jerry Brown's speech in Bonn
What does Daniel Ilario think of Governor Brown? “I don’t have anything against him as a person, but in fact he is no climate hero. I’m thankful that activists in Bonn sacrificed their time and energy to secure a livable future for generations to come,” he stated. "Saving forests’ sounds great, but at the end of the day we get more pollution at home while indigenous people lose their land in the Amazon and abroad with carbon trading and carbon pricing,” he concluded. Militarism and its complicities
Though it proclaims itself against police militarization, Berkeley City Council has renewed three militarizing federal relationships: the Fusion Center (NCRIC), urban surveillence technology, and Project 1033. It apparently does not see how these projects work together, nor that they are pro-militarist. And in its conceit, it thinks it can control them each separately. That is a mistake....

Hundreds of teachers, students and parents rallied to protest the multi-million dollar cuts that the Oakland Unified School District is ordering to deal with the financial crisis. Big Oil spent more lobbying in first 6 months of 2017 than in all of 2016
The Western States Petroleum Association (WSPA) and Big Oil use their money and power in 5 ways: through (1) lobbying; (2) campaign spending; (3) creating Astroturf groups: 4) working in collaboration with media; and (5) getting appointed to positions on and influencing regulatory panels, as in the case of the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Initiative to create so-called "marine protected areas. New Reports Expose Racial and Economic Injustice, Ineffectiveness of Pollution Trading
Wenonah Hauter, executive director of Food & Water Watch, said, “Pollution trading schemes like cap-and-trade unjustly burden lower-income communities of color. This is a fact. So many of us are rightfully desperate for solutions to our climate crisis, but market-based policies won’t save us. The only real way to significantly reduce carbon pollution is to stop producing it. We must move off fossil fuels now.” Photo: Governor Jerry Brown speaks at the COP 23 in Bonn, Germany on November 1...

Jerry Brown tells indigenous protesters in Bonn, 'Let's put you in the ground'
“I wanted to leave a message here, for humanity and all of planet, that the peoples need to join to defend Mother Nature, the soil, water and air because they are being threatened,” said Ninawa Nuneshuni Kui, President of the Huni Kui People of Acre, Brazil. “And humanity needs Nature to survive. So I want to say that Nature and the air are not a means of commerce for anyone and it’s every human’s right to live in peace. Jerry Brown’s ‘American Pledge’ will lead to the displacement of my peop...

The environmental injustice and dirty oil behind California's 'green’ facade
Governor Jerry Brown may be pulling “people together” and getting people to “wake up,” but not in the way that he intended, as increasing numbers of Californians mobilize against the Governor’s steadfast support of fracking and drilling dirty oil, a Big Oil-written cap-and-trade program and permits to pollute groundwater with oil wastewater in Kern County, as well as his environmentally unjust Delta Tunnels project....

How Many Homeless Shelter Beds are there in Fresno ... and why it matters
The City of Fresno recently passed a Homeless No Camping ordinance. You can read about one action in resistance to that law here. This article explores the issue of shelter beds in Fresno. Photo below: This was a City of Fresno worker destroying a structure in a homeless encampment in 2011. Homeless advocates believe that instead of destroying homeless people’s modest homes, the City of Fresno should be helping them....
