Quick Guide to the Anti-Maskers in Santa Cruz
The anti-mask protesters in Santa Cruz have been widely criticized for using tactics that have more in common with terrorism than political speech. After storming Trader Joe's as a mask-less group on February 13, the anti-maskers returned to Trader Joe's for a second protest on February 28. They call themselves the Santa Cruz Voluntaryists. Their defacto leader is a San Jose resident named David Rodriguez, who has been organizing "voluntaryist barbecues" with anti-vaccination protesters in Santa Cruz since 2019. The anti-maskers' beliefs are both influenced by the anti-vaccination movement, as well as the far-right sovereign citizens movement.

Since 2019, the core organizers of the Santa Cruz Voluntaryists have been David Rodriguez, Nick Clifford, and Tim Welch. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit in 2020, two "outside agitators" joined Rodriguez to organize numerous anti-mask protests in Santa Cruz: Mike Mattingly, a radical anti-vaccination protester from Campbell, CA, and Howard Lichtman, a right-wing conspiracy blogger from the East Coast whose pen name is "Etienne de la Boetie 2." Using that pen name, Lichtman has in the past written in support of the militia movement.

Tim welch is NOT on any Boulder Creek rec District board and has not been for years.

God dammit this fool Rodriguez is making San Jo look bad!!! I saw these people on the Morrissey overpass with this huge sign back in like november or something when I was coming into Santa Cruz. It said "blah blah blah psyops blah blah TAKE OFF YOUR MASK!"
This post from Kristy Moonbeam Fernandes demonstrates a few things:
1) She spreads misinformation.
2) She continues to spread misinformation even after being called out by a friend (known anti-vaxxer, Satya Orion).
3) She enjoys playing the victim role and making up stories. No, Trader Joe's employees did not assault her. But the video does show the Sovereign Citizen group push their way through the store with no regard for customers or employees.
There appears to be no evidence that Trader Joe's is doing what she is suggesting in her post but there is an article that came out recently that talks about lifting mask requirements. Hmm, what will this group protest after all of the local businesses no longer require masks??

For a group that describes themselves as being critical thinkers who question everything, I sure hope their followers start questioning the fake news more often. Being a sheep sucks.
