Theodore Lorek III was born on August 2, 1963 in Illinois. He received his Bachelor of Science degree at Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, Illinois.

Ted worked as a Senior Software Engineer for the Santa Cruz County Government Center.

After an early retirement, Ted volunteered for the Fungus Federation of Santa Cruz, Cabrillo Stage, Santa Cruz Shakespeare and Burning Man.

Ted loved hunting for edible chanterelles in Bonny Doon, morels in Pipi Valley and King Bolete mushrooms on forays near Echo Summit.

Ted enjoyed mountain biking, backpacking, Sierra Club hikes, attending “First Friday” art receptions, sipping wine and sampling hors d’oeuvres. Ted soaked in nearly every hot spring in the Western United States.

Restoring his vintage VW cow bus, VW rainbow bus and “Caribox” were among Ted’s artistic passions.

At age 57, while riding his new electric bike on Saturday, January 23, shortly before 6 pm, Ted accidentally crashed into the median divider on Sumner Avenue south of Dolphin Drive, in Rio Del Mar, CA. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ted is survived by his mother Barbara McCall, brother Edward, sister Laura and nephew Teddy Jr. whom reside in Texas.

Ted Lorek will be especially missed by Santa Cruz County residents: Karen Kaplan, Kevin Bell, Susan Kauffman, Heather Troy and his longtime childhood friend “Kraut.”

Family and friends are encouraged to share photos on Facebook: Theodore Funguy, Scotts Valley, CA.

We are so sad to hear of Ted's death. We didn't know him well, but always enjoyed conversing with him at art events, especially a the Santa Cruz Art League, Blitzer's Gallery, The Non-Violence Center, etc. -- especially during First Friday receptions He was bright, sincere, extremely observant, had a good sense of humor, and a deeply sad quality about him which seemed to give him a deep sense of empathy. My son-in-law just got a new electric bike to ride around with his daughters on their regular bikes over here on the West Side, and my heart leapt with trepidation when he unpacked. I was barely over rejoicing that he finally sold his motorcycle. My own attempts at fast cycles have always ended in disaster--broken bones, bikes, and egos (mine in particular), but I quickly learned that Wild Things had short life spans, and I had four kids to raise, so I put down the bikes before they put me down . I wish I had known Ted better. Perhaps in our next incarnations. Meanwhile, we wish peace to the hearts of Ted's family and lovers and friends. At least his restless search is over. For now. And that circle down in Rio Del Mar is a bitch to negotiate! Not quite "roundabout" enough.

So sorry to hear about this tragic and sad news. Sorry to Karen Kaplan and to all of Ted’s friends and family. Ted will be missed by all. He had an authentic smile that came straight from his heart. And he loved to flash that sweet smile and have fun. So sad to learn about this tragedy.
