Dignity Village and Allies Stood Up to Resist Eviction and the City of Oakland Backed Down
The city of Oakland threatened to evict residents from the Housing and Dignity Village on December 5. Oakland police and city public works employees blocked off parking on S Elmhurst Ave to prepare for the eviction. But early in the morning gates to the community were locked and dozens showed up to place themselves between the encampment and police. The city backed down, promising to enter into new negotiations with residents.
