Guy Colwell’s work tries to answer questions about the purpose of visual art. Is it to create beauty and make pleasing, soothing, color-coordinated decorations for living room walls, or is there a more serious and important reason to make pictures? In an effort to answer these questions Colwell has produced artworks that have been described as “necessary,” “important,” “unique,” “powerful,” “controversial,” “challenging,” “penetrating,” “devastating.” Colwell’s work falls into three main groups; Social Realism, Surrealistic animal encounters and pure animal paintings. All three have a social or political message.
