SF Call Out for Emergency Actions If Julian Assange Is Evicted

by Nozomi Hayase
Prosecution of WikiLeaks founder and editor-in-chief Julian Assange endangers viability of The First Amendment. This is a call for We the People in the city of San Francisco to join the global mobilization to defend the right of free speech and journalism.

Julian Assange has been arbitrarily detained at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for over 6 years as a political prisoner against the threat of extradition to the U.S., relating to his publishing activities with WikiLeaks. Ecuador is reportedly preparing to evict Assange from the embassy where he is put in solitary, deprived of sunlight and medical care. If he walks out of the embassy, Assange is expected to be arrested by the UK authorities. There is an ongoing secret grand jury against WikiLeaks and its staff since 2010 and it is reported that the US government is preparing to prosecute Assange for the publication of classified documents. This prosecution against journalists set a dangerous precedent for press freedom, opening a door for criminalization of journalism at large.

Prosecution of Julian Assange endangers viability of the First Amendment. We the People in San Francisco will join the global mobilization to defend the right to free speech and journalism.

1) Action 1- Emergency Protest on the Following Day of Julian Assange’s Eviction from the Ecuadorian Embassy

We will hold a rally at 12:00 PM outside San Francisco City Hall, 1Dr Carlton B Goodlett Pl

2) Action 2- Mass Rally on the Following Sunday of Assange’s Eviction from the Embassy

This initial mobilization will then be followed by the mass rally at 12:00 PM also outside San Francisco City Hall.

When Assange was helping Chelsea Manning leak evidence of US military atrocities and State Department double-dealing with shady and repressive countries, we all cheered.

Now, he's lost whatever good will and credibility he had as an impartial anti-State transparency advocate. We know he's a supporter of Trump and Trump's white nationalist agenda, allowing himself to become a tool of Russian intelligence agencies in the process.

Fuck Julian Assange.

All we can reasonably do is laugh at him now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFGjvH6Q2rQ

Trump will likely pardon him anyway, so he's not in much danger from the U.S. government any more.

I don't think Assange has much to fear from the trolls, for example the F.U. nonsense of the first commentator. The only thing Assange need fear at this stage is that Trump will not do the honorable thing and pardon him from whatever -- unless the calculation gives Trump at least 11 votes gained for every 10 lost in the next presidential election. It entirely depends on how Trump figures he can best spin the story of what he is doing, and find a way to say to target groups of every different persuasion, exactly what they want to hear, without the other groups realizing the contradictions.

Trump will quite happily throw anyone under the bus unless he can find the right spin on the story. There is no morality involved what-so-ever.

You get around. That's a nice empathetic sentiment for a man who has been locked up in an small room for 6 years away from family and country. He's the person who brought us the Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, Collateral Murder, the Russian spy files--if you've ever been to Wikileaks. You liked him fine when the publications criticized the Bush administration but like so many others, you cannot take responsibility for the DNC throwing their chance to win away. So all you can say is "he helped Trump." The fact is, the DNC helped Trump, even encouraged Trump to run. The Pied Piper Strategy. It's all there. Sorry, Assange can't be your little mascot.

Love Assange or hate him, the last laugh will be on all of us because it is not really about him. Yes, they can silence him, cut him off from the world and render him into solitary confinement as they have done; no internet, no phone, no visitors, and they can extradite him to the US to face a secret grand jury and lock him away for 30 years or kill him, and you can laugh and laugh and laugh all the way.

But the laugh is going to ultimately be on you if there is anyone left to laugh because they are coming for all of us in one way or the other. There is a grand movement to join social media, television media, and print media to government and censor everything and everyone the I.C. doesn't like -- and it is coming. Don't think so? Look what happened this week: Not just to the odious Alex Jones but to many others. So laugh away.
