Hate crime charges filed against driver accused of plowing into Charlottesville rally

By Lynda Carson - June 29, 2018

On Wednesday, June 27, 2018, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that a federal grand jury charged James Alex Fields Jr., with federal hate crimes, including a hate crimes act.

James Alex Fields Jr., was indicted on 30 counts, and is the man accused of driving his car through a crowd protesting against neo-Nazis and white supremacists at a Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, last August, resulting in the death Heather Hyer, a 32-year-old-paralegal. The incident also resulted in 19 others being injured by the hate filled incident.

David Duke, a former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was a speaker at the Unite the Right rally last August, where Heather Hyer was killed. Shortly after the hate filled neo-Nazi event occurred in Charlottesville, during August last year, I exposed some of David Duke’s campaign contributors to his 2016, U.S. Senate campaign.

After exposing some of David Duke’s campaign contributors including Roger Grigsby of Santa Cruz, and Julius De Roma of Minneapolis, it resulted in boycotts and the closure of a restaurant in Santa Cruz, and the boycotts and the closure of a night club in Minneapolis.

Reportedly, both the restaurant and night club have reopened since last August, and the restaurant may be open under a new name.

According to the DOJ, James Alex Fields Jr., 21, of Maumee, Ohio, was charged in an indictment with:

• one count of a hate crime act resulting in the death of Heather Heyer (18 U.S.C. § 249);

• 28 counts of hate crime acts causing bodily injury and involving an attempt to kill (18 U.S.C. § 249); and

• one count of racially motivated violent interference with a federally protected activity (18 U.S.C. § 245(b)(2)), resulting in the death of Heather Heyer, for driving his car into a crowd of protestors on a downtown street in Charlottesville, Virginia.
