Protesters Crash Oakland Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Set to Feature Mayor Libby Schaaf

by Oakland not for sale
Before 8am on Friday, March 18, over a hundred housing activists caught the Oakland Chamber of Commerce off guard at their "Oakland is open for business" breakfast for real estate developers. Protesters were able to completely shut down the 2016 Economic Development Summit at the Kaiser Building on Lake Merritt before Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf could even give her opening remarks. Once inside, demonstrators took the stage. Lockboxes were used to block one of the main entrances to the conference room. Multiple chants, including "Housing is a human right," rang out. The shutdown was organized to interrupt the red carpet that Oakland is rolling out to businesses and developers while the Mayor and City Council refuse to declare a housing state of emergency or take any significant actions to halt the massive displacement of long-time Oakland residents currently disrupting communities across the city.

In addition to the demands listed above, please always list a demand for public housing for the entire workingclass, the 80% of us who make less than $80,000 a year, and an immediate moratorium on all luxury housing, which by definition, those of us who are workingclass cannot afford because the rent is more than one-fourth our net income, and of course, if we do not make at least $120,000 a year, cannot afford to buy, and do not need a house since a house is just a tax shelter. The money for public housing must be transferred from the police and military budgets since we cannot have guns and butter. It can also come from taxing the 750,000 millionaire households in California. All rich people have at least one home, and many have more than one home so there is no need for any luxury housing whatsoever. The profit motive must be removed from all housing construction now.

The reason we have a housing and homeless crisis since 1980, when Democrat Carter was president, is due to the cutbacks in public housing by Democrats and Republicans, and the Democrats are not proposing increasing the public housing budget and cutting the military and police budgets. Libby Schaaf is a Democrat, and so is the entire Oakland City Council, to my knowledge. They all do what the Democratic Party tells them to do, namely, serve the same capitalist class as the Republican Party serves.

If you have had enough of the twin parties of war and fascism, and private profit luxury housing, please change to the 2 parties that want public housing, peace and the abolition of the police state and the military, namely Peace & Freedom Party and the Green Party.
